Discord Voice XP: How to Reward Members for Call Time

February 25, 2026

Voice XP rewards Discord members for time in voice channels. How Kiai's works, which bots paywall it, and how to set rates without breaking your server.

Most Discord activity scoring counts one thing: who types. That means the members who keep your server alive, the ones in the game-night call every Thursday, show nowhere on the leaderboard. Voice XP fixes that, and it's the feature difference we most often see quoted when servers switch to Kiai.

What voice XP actually is

Voice XP awards experience points for time spent in voice channels. In Kiai, members earn a configurable amount per minute, and the system checks voice channels every 30 seconds as people sit in them.

The details that matter:

  • Real presence check. Members must be unmuted and undeafened to earn. Someone who parks in a channel on mute isn't farming XP from an empty bedroom.
  • Minimum headcount. Set the minimum number of people a channel needs before XP counts. Solo idling earns nothing; a real hangout does.
  • Everything stacks. Role, channel, and server multipliers apply to voice XP. A double-XP weekend applies to voice XP. The member who shows up for your event earns double like everyone else.
  • Denylists apply. Staff bots and afk channels don't contribute.

The setting lives in /settings > Voice XP on Kiai, with per-minute rate and minimum-user values. Kiai needs View Channel and Connect in each voice channel for it to work there, which the default permissions already include.

Why voice time beats message counts

Chat volume measures willingness to type. Voice time measures something closer to actual community. A member who plays two hours of games with your regulars every night is your backbone, and a text-only XP system scores them at zero until they type "gg".

Concretely, servers we watch run voice XP see three consistent effects:

  • The leaderboard finally reflects the room. Your event regulars climb without ever posting a meme.
  • Calls stop emptying out at the start of events. Being in the call is itself being "on the leaderboard"; late joiners see it.
  • Role rewards become meaningful for quiet members. Your level thresholds now reward attendance and chat both, which is what "active" actually means.

Setting it up without distorting your server

Turn voice XP on with a per-minute rate roughly equal to your message XP reward. If members earn 5 to 15 per message, 5 to 10 per minute of voice is a balanced default; a two-hour hangout then outpaces a few hundred messages, which reflects reality without making voice the only way to progress.

The minimum-user requirement is the one setting people configure wrong. Set it to 2 or 3 and leave it. A member alone in a channel is "waiting", not "participating", and 1-person XP turns voice XP into an AFK farm fast.

If your server runs structured events, remember multipliers are time-boxable: a 2x server multiplier for the event's duration rewards everyone present without leaving a permanent boost running afterward.

How other bots handle voice

This is where leveling bots genuinely differ, because voice XP is expensive to run and easy to paywall:

  • MEE6: voice-related leveling features are behind their premium.
  • Amari: voice XP and the multiplier system are donator-only.
  • LevelUp: voice XP support exists in its free tier.
  • Kiai: voice XP is free on every server, full stop.

We've documented the per-bot details in the comparison posts (MEE6, Amari, LevelUp), with the caveat that their feature lists move; check their own pages if precision matters for a purchase decision.

How the checks actually work

Every 30 seconds Kiai looks at each voice channel and awards half of the per-minute rate to each eligible member, rounded down. Eligible means: unmuted, undeafened, not denylisted, and the channel has at least the minimum number of members you configured. Muted and deafened people count toward that headcount even though they earn nothing themselves, which is the right behavior for game lobbies where two people have muted their mics. Multipliers multiply the award: a member with a 2x role multiplier in a 2x-boosted channel during a 2x server event earns eight times the base rate. Voice minutes also surface independently on /leaderboard and show up on rank cards, so the leaderboard isn't just an XP abstraction.

If any of that sounds like it could describe your server wrong, the fix is a rate change, not disabling voice XP. The setting is a one-number dial; use it.

Voice XP across bots, side by side

LevelUpYesText + voice in the free tier
CakeyBotYes5-8 XP per minute default
KiaiYesEvery server, presence-checked

We've kept the per-bot detail in the full comparisons rather than repeating it here, and the usual caveat applies: vendor feature lists move, so verify against their pages if you're shopping. The pattern to notice, though, is that voice XP is the single most commonly paywalled leveling feature there is. A bot that gives it away free is pricing its premium differently, and that philosophical difference shows up everywhere else too.

The honest limitation

Voice XP rewards presence, not conversation quality. Someone AFK-but-unmuted earns like a participant; that's the trade every voice-leveling system makes, handled by minimums, denylists, and cooldowns rather than human review. The counterweight is that your members can see who's in the call, and social accountability does the rest.

Turn it on, set the minimum to 2, watch a week of leaderboards, and adjust the rate to whatever feels right. In our experience it takes one adjustment, and voice-active servers rarely turn it off.

Quick answers

How much voice XP per minute is fair? Match it to your message rate. If messages pay 5 to 15, pay voice 5 to 10 per minute: an hour-long hangout then outearns a couple hundred messages, which is roughly the relationship you want.

Can members farm it? Not with the defaults. Empty channels and solo idling earn nothing via the minimum-user setting, and muted members never earn. The exploit that remains is a room of people idling with open mics, and that's at least real presence.

Do rate changes apply retroactively? No. Rates are prospect-only; nobody's earned XP changes when you adjust later.
