MEE6 made Discord leveling the default. We think it's showing its age. Switch to Kiai without resetting your members' levels, and pay less in most cases.
Discord bots come and go. MEE6 stuck. Almost every server owner has installed it at some point, which is exactly why "MEE6 alternative" became one of the most searched phrases around Discord server management. People aren't searching it because MEE6 is broken. They're searching it because the leveling system works but the paywall keeps creeping, and because leveling itself has become the backbone of how communities keep members engaged.
That's why we built Kiai, and what this post covers: how the two bots compare on the things that actually matter. What you get free. How the XP system behaves. What happens to your leaderboard history. And what switching costs you in time and money.
One opinion up front, since we make one of the two products: if all you want is message XP and a leaderboard, either bot is fine and you can stop reading. If you want voice-based activity tracked, role rewards that maintain themselves, and a server that runs its own engagement without a monthly tax on every feature, Kiai is the stronger pick.
What a leveling bot actually does for your server
Before comparing products it helps to agree on the job.
Levels give your members a visible reason to come back. A new person joins, sees a leaderboard up front, and realizes the chatty regulars aren't just chatty. They're Level 42 with a special role. That's incentive you don't have to manage. An XP system quietly turns "is anyone actually active here?" into a dashboard you can check.
The mechanics most servers care about are the same four things:
- XP for messages, the baseline everyone expects.
- XP for voice time. This one matters more than people expect. Servers where people actually hang out in voice channels feel alive. Servers where only text activity counts feel like a forum.
- Role rewards, automatic roles at level milestones, so your "Regular" role isn't a chore you assign by hand.
- Leaderboards, the public scoreboard that makes the whole loop visible.
Whichever bot you pick, get those four right and your server will feel more active within a few weeks. Where the two products differ is what they charge you to get there.
What MEE6's free tier actually gives you
Credit where it's due: MEE6's basic leveling works fine. Message XP. A leaderboard. Level-up notifications. For a small community that wants nothing else, MEE6 at zero cost is a reasonable choice.
The walls go up as soon as you want a real engagement system:
- Voice levels are premium. On MEE6, tracking time in voice channels is part of their paid tier, which is odd when you consider that voice presence is arguably the strongest engagement signal a server has. You're asked to pay for counting who's in a call.
- Many of the other leveling options sit behind paywalls, which adds up fast for a server that just wants a complete XP setup.
- Their pricing is per-server. Run two or three communities and you're buying the same subscription repeatedly.
None of this makes MEE6 a bad bot. It makes it a bot whose business model charges for breadth. If you've already paid for it and it does everything you need, genuinely no hard feelings. Keep the bot you have.
What Kiai gives you free, out of the box
We'll go feature by feature, since this is where the difference gets concrete.
Voice XP is free. As long as someone's actually in a voice channel (Kiai checks for real presence, so idling with a dead mic doesn't farm levels), they earn XP. Voice is often 30 to 60% of a server's real engagement, and Kiai counts it on every server, including the free ones.
Role rewards are free. Set milestones: Level 10 gets Supporter, Level 25 gets Regular, Level 50 gets Veteran. Kiai assigns and removes roles on its own, and if someone's level drops (admins can adjust XP), roles adjust too. Hand-maintained role rosters go away.
XP multipliers are free. Boost XP in #general. Give a 1.5x multiplier to a patreon role. Run a double-XP weekend for the community birthday. Channel, role, and server-wide multipliers are all in the free tier; you're only limited on how many temporary event multipliers you keep stacked at once, and that limit lifts with premium.
Level-up announcements are free. Fully templated with placeholders. Mention the member, name the level, drop a gif, post it in #achievements or as an ephemeral message nobody else sees. This sounds small. It's the single most visible engagement loop in a server.
Denylists and fairness controls are free. No XP in #bot-spam. No XP for accounts that just joined to farm levels. No double-dipping in channels you exempt. The moderation side of an XP system, included.
The dashboard covers all of it. kiai.app/dashboard. No slash-command archaeology, no memorizing configs. Every feature above is clickable.
And no, this isn't a trial. It's the free tier of a free bot.
Rank cards and leaderboards
The rank card is the face of a leveling bot, and it's what people screenshot.
Kiai's free rank response shows rank, level, XP progress toward the next level, and voice time. That covers most servers' whole requirement. If you want the card to look like your community, with custom backgrounds, your branding, colors that match the server's aesthetic, that's the flagship premium feature, and it comes with niceties like XP streak settings and automatic leaderboards that post a ranked list to a channel on a schedule.
Leaderboards in the free tier cover what most servers need: server-wide rankings, timed windows, per-channel views. Premium extends window length and automates the posting. The point is the loop. Someone notices they're #18 and nine messages away from #17, and engagement happens on its own.
Switching from MEE6 without losing XP
Here's where most comparison posts tell you what you lose. Let's skip that part.
Kiai imports levels from twelve bots: MEE6, Amari, Cakey Bot, Discortics, Engauge, Gaius Play, LevelUp, Lurkr, Piggy, Polaris, RoleOnly, and Tatsu. Every member's XP, rank, and level carries over. Your MEE6 history becomes Kiai history.
Importing from MEE6 goes through its public leaderboard. Flip "Make my server's leaderboard public" on in the MEE6 dashboard, run /import in your server, pick MEE6, and Kiai rebuilds everyone's XP from that data. No MEE6 account access needed. If your server has a MEE6 premium vanity URL on the leaderboard, remove it first and put it back after.
The people on your leaderboard notice nothing except that the rank card looks different. Same numbers, same hierarchy, same Regulars being Regulars.
Pricing, specifically
- Kiai free: everything above. Voice XP, role rewards, multipliers, level-up messages, denylists, dashboard, imports, leaderboards,
rankfor any member, leaderboard. - Kiai server premium: $1.99 to $9.99 per month, scaling with server size, so small servers pay $1.99. What's in it: customizable rank cards, XP streak controls, automatic leaderboards, unlimited temporary multipliers, longer timed leaderboards, the prestige system, and Message Kit Pro as a bonus.
- Kiai user premium: $4.99 once, not monthly, for a member who wants a nicer rank card personally.
- MEE6: a subscription per server, and you're buying it to unlock features Kiai ships free. We won't quote their exact prices here because they change; check their site if you want the comparison math.
If pricing is your only filter, run the free tiers of both for a week. It's a legitimate experiment and it answers the question better than any blog post, including this one.
The switch, step by step
- Add Kiai to your server
- Run
/import, pick MEE6 from the bot list - Open MEE6's dashboard and enable the public leaderboard if it isn't already
- Adjust XP rates, multipliers, and role rewards in the Kiai dashboard
- Kick MEE6, or leave it for its other plugins. Leveling is Kiai's job now.
Ten to fifteen minutes, all told. And if you'd rather test before committing, run both bots for a week and decide on real data.
Questions we get about switching
Will my members lose their levels if we switch? No. That's the /import step. XP carries over from MEE6 (and the other eleven bots), so your leaderboard picks up exactly where it left off.
Does voice time count toward levels in Kiai? Yes, free. Members earn XP while they're actually present in voice channels; a muted mic earns nothing.
Is the whole MEE6 feature set available free in Kiai? The leveling fundamentals are: voice XP, role rewards, multipliers, level-up messages. Premium extras in Kiai (custom rank cards, automatic leaderboards, prestige) are things MEE6 also gates. The difference is what sits in the free tier, and Kiai's free tier is deliberately complete.
Can we go back if we don't like it? Yes. Nothing about importing locks anything in. Uninvite the bot and everything reverts; your original data was only ever read, not moved.
What if our server is huge or has weird settings? Multipliers, denylists, and custom formulas exist precisely for that. If something doesn't fit, ask in the Kiai support server. Somebody there handles these migrations weekly and will tell you honestly whether your setup makes sense.
Bottom line
MEE6 helped define Discord leveling. If it already serves your community completely, you don't owe anyone a bot swap.
But if you've hit the paywall for something basic, like voice XP, role rewards, or multipliers, you now have options that didn't exist a few years ago. Kiai's free tier covers the complete system, the premium tier costs less than most subscriptions you currently ignore, and switching takes ten minutes without anyone losing progress.
