LevelUp vs Kiai: Two Free Discord Leveling Bots Compared

June 24, 2026

LevelUp is fully free with voice XP; Kiai adds a dashboard, more languages, and an import carrying levels, rewards, and multipliers in one command.

LevelUp is the most underrated bot in this series: completely free, text and voice XP, genuinely deep configuration. It's also command-only, English/German/French only, and directory reviews periodically complain about stability. So the comparison here is not free versus paid. It's two free bots, one with a dashboard and one without, and which tradeoffs suit your server.

What LevelUp does well

From its own listing, no hedging needed: LevelUp is 100% free, with text and voice XP, multipliers (with duration, rate, and per-role/channel scoping), role rewards, rank cards, denylists and bypasses, and a live leaderboard that posts into a channel and updates hourly. It imports data from other bots including MEE6. It supports slash commands and three languages: English, German, and French.

That's an unusually honest feature list for a free tier. If you run a German- or French-speaking community, LevelUp is the obvious leveling bot, full stop, and you should stop reading here.

Where the tradeoffs sit

No dashboard. Every setting is slash commands. LevelUp's own reviewers flag exactly this ("just missing a Dashboard and it could be one of the best level bots"). If you have two admins, or you tune settings from a phone, or you run multi-server setups, command-only configuration is the tax you pay every session. Kiai's setup lives at kiai.app/dashboard: rewards, multipliers, announcements, denylists, cards.

Language coverage. LevelUp speaks English, German, French. Kiai is built on a translation system that is broader and growing. If your community reads Portuguese, Spanish, or anything else, this is a one-bot-decision factor on its own.

Scale and stability. LevelUp runs on roughly 10 to 13 thousand servers, and directory reviews have periodically mentioned outages, which is the trade-off of a free, community-run system at that scale. Kiai runs on the same infrastructure that serves our dashboard, APIs, and changelog, with the monitoring to match.

The ecosystem around leveling. Kiai ships XP streaks, XP drops, leaderboard position roles, money rewards via UnbelievaBoat, nickname and custom-message rewards, signed webhook rewards, prestige, and a web calculator for tuning your XP curve. LevelUp's list is respectable but flatter; it's a level bot, not a small engagement stack.

The import: this is where it gets interesting

Kiai's LevelUp import is the deepest in our roster. /import with a LevelUp export carries over:

  • Member levels and XP (the part everyone cares about)
  • Role rewards
  • Denylists
  • Multipliers
  • Level-up message settings
  • General settings including XP rates
  • The XP formula itself (LevelUp's 100 × level² curve carries over, so progress feel stays identical)

And one detail our docs call out: importing LevelUp's other settings also unlocks /auto-leaderboard create on your server free, without Server Premium, because that's the direct replacement for LevelUp's live leaderboard.

The flow: run LevelUp's /export in your server, attach the file to /import, choose what transfers. Ten minutes, and both bots can run side by side during the comparison week.

Straight verdict from the table: LevelUp wins on simplicity (there is no bill), and on live leaderboards being free. Kiai wins on the dashboard, the ecosystem around leveling, scale, and language coverage. If you love command configuration and don't need any of the extras, LevelUp is a completely reasonable forever choice.

The configuration culture difference

The honest daily-use difference between the two isn't a feature list, it's workflow.

On a command-only bot, every change is a slash command in Discord: set the multiplier, edit the reward, adjust the announcement. That's fine for solo admins who like it. The pain arrives with the situations every three-admin server eventually hits: one admin changes rates from their phone during a bus ride, another wants to see the current multiplier list without running four commands, and a third wants to check whether the reward at level 30 gives or removes the role. On Kiai, all of that is a dashboard page with the live values visible, editable by whoever has dashboard access, with an audit log.

Multi-server owners feel it too. Five servers on a command-only bot means five separate command memories. Five servers on Kiai are five switchable contexts on one website.

Neither workflow is wrong. But if you've ever copied a command from a notes app because you forgot its options, you already know which one you prefer.

The switch, step by step

  1. Add Kiai
  2. Run /export in the server via LevelUp
  3. Run /import in Kiai's flow, choose LevelUp, attach the export
  4. Look at the settings in the dashboard and confirm what carried over
  5. Remove LevelUp once the leaderboard checks out

Quick answers

Will server look and feel change? Levels, roles, rewards, multipliers, and the curve all transfer, so progress continues on the same trajectory. Announcement formatting is the main thing to re-tune in the dashboard.

Do we lose the live leaderboard? No. Kiai's /auto-leaderboard create is the equivalent, and importing LevelUp settings unlocks it free rather than requiring Server Premium.

Does Kiai have a LevelUp-style XP formula? The export carries your formula over. If you'd rather start fresh, the default Kiai curve and the calculator are where everyone starts tuning.

Both bots at once? Possible, but two bots competing over the same leaderboard confuses members. Import once, decide, then remove one.

Why does LevelUp exist if Kiai is also free? Because two free bots serving different languages and configuration cultures is good for Discord. We'd rather compete on dashboard and ecosystem than pretend the alternative doesn't work.
