Discord level roles are assigned automatically at level milestones. How to structure, stack, and automate them, plus the failure modes to avoid.
Level roles are the part of a leveling system members actually feel: hit level 15, get your color. They're also the part most often set up badly, as a chore list someone maintains by hand or a reward structure that stops meaning anything past level 20. Here's the setup that holds up, and the failure modes to skip.
What level roles are
A level role (or "role reward", Discord's broader term) is a role a member receives automatically at a level threshold. Level 5 earns Member, level 20 earns Regular, level 50 earns Veteran. The bot assigns and removes roles as levels move.
On Kiai you add them with /rewards add role <role> <level>, and the command handles both directions: roles can be granted or removed at a threshold, which surprises people but has real uses. Removing a role at a level works for stripping onboarding roles, or dropping a beginner channel once someone's established.
Kiai needs Manage Roles and its own role above every reward role in your hierarchy. That's the single most common reason "it didn't work the first time".
A structure that scales
The mistake is inventing twenty roles on day one. Roles should mean something at each level, and fewer, spaced-out milestones stay meaningful longer. What we see working:
- Level 5: Member. First reward, quick so newcomers feel the loop on day one.
- Level 15: Active. Usually a color or small flex.
- Level 30: Regular. Recognized. Possibly a channel unlock.
- Level 60: Veteran. Tenure badge, maybe a vanity.
- Past that: prestige or a long, slow ladder, depending on your community.
Keep level roles and permission roles separate. A level role that grants Manage Messages turns your leaderboard into an audit problem. If you want XP to unlock permissions, gate the feature channels instead and revoke manually.
Decide stacking early. By default members keep every role reward they qualify for, so a veteran wears five level roles. That's fine and even popular for color ladders. If it gets noisy, "stack role rewards" off means only the highest-tier role applies. Both are defensible; pick one and don't flip-flop, because members notice role churn.
Decide what happens on a level drop. XP decay or an admin manage-xp move can pull someone below a threshold, and by default Kiai reverses the reward to match. For competitive servers that's correct. For color roles members grow attached to, turning reverse off is kinder.
Beyond roles
Role rewards aren't the only reward type, and mixing them keeps older members engaged:
- Money rewards through the UnbelievaBoat integration, paying out at milestones into your economy bot's cash or bank.
- Custom messages that fire in a channel: "hit level 25, say hi in #achievements".
- Nickname formats that attach a milestone emoji to a member's name.
- Webhooks (premium) that fire a signed JSON event to your site Discord-wide, useful if your community has a website that grants perks.
Rewards can also require an existing role (so a Patreon-only reward ladder exists inside the same thresholds) or a prestige level once prestige is on.
The leaderboard-position alternative
Separate from level rewards entirely: leaderboard position roles track who's currently #1, in the top 3, this week, and assign roles to those members, re-checking on every XP change. That's a live crown, not a tenure badge, and the two coexist: a Regular role for tenure plus a "Top 3 this week" role for the current race.
The combo fixes the classic leaderboard complaint, "the top is frozen", because the tenure roles stay stable while the position role keeps moving around.
How other bots scope role rewards
Role rewards are free everywhere serious, but the caps differ enough to matter:
| Free role rewards | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
| MEE6 | Premium | Role rewards are part of their paid tier |
| Amari | Yes, capped features around them | Premium gates announcements and multipliers, not rewards themselves |
| LevelUp | Yes | Rewards, multipliers, denylists all free |
| CakeyBot | Up to 10, then 20 on premium | Pinned leaderboards and vanity URLs also paid |
| Kiai | Yes | Rewards including temp roles, removals, required-role gating |
Two details worth knowing beyond the cap column. First, reward behavior varies: some bots only stack, or lack remove-on-demotion, and rebuilding that in another bot means manual role audits. Second, reward-adjacent features trend paid: leaderboard position roles, pinned leaderboards, and level-up announcements are exactly the features MEE6 and CakeyBot monetize. Compare the whole loop, not just the reward count.
Failure modes we see
- The graveyard ladder. Twenty roles to level 200, and rewards stop mattering after week one. Space your milestones by doubling XP gaps, not by even numbers.
- The permission leak. Someone sets a mod-capable role as a reward. Don't. Discord's own role-hierarchy warnings will not save you from a level-70 troll with kick perms.
- Reward spam. Fifteen stacked roles on one member makes profiles look like a slot machine. Cap stacking or space rewards.
- Forgotten sync. Added rewards after members already passed those levels?
/rewards sync serverre-applies everything to current levels.
Rewards are a twenty-minute setup that pays off for years, and they're free on Kiai (like role rewards are on every serious leveling bot). The craft is in choosing thresholds people still care about in month six.
Quick answers
Do members need to do anything to claim a level role? No. The bot checks XP continuously; roles appear when the threshold is crossed.
What happens to roles if a member's XP gets reset? With reverse rewards on, they drop off with the level, which matches the leaderboard. With it off, granted roles stay.
Can a reward require both a level and another role? Yes. A required role gates a reward, so Patreon ladders and staff-track rewards can live at the same levels as public ones.
How many rewards should we start with? Three to five. Every reward past the first dilutes the ones before it.
